The Ones That Do Not Fit a Category

A meaningful proportion of what we make does not fit any of the above, and those are usually the most interesting pieces we produce.

Send a reference, a rough idea, or a photograph. We will tell you honestly whether it will cast well.

The question is always castability

The limit is almost never imagination and almost always physics. Molten silver has to flow into every part of a mould and then survive being handled. Thin projections, unsupported spans, deep undercuts and very fine texture all have limits, and knowing them early saves everybody disappointment.

What tends not to work

  • Very thin unsupported projections — antennae, wires, thin spikes.
  • Long unsupported spans, which sag or snap.
  • Deep undercuts that trap the mould.
  • Extremely fine surface texture below the resolution of the process.
  • Anything requiring a moving part, which is a different craft entirely.

The brief with no reference at all

Some commissions have no photograph, no object and no precedent — an idea somebody has been carrying around, a concept, a joke that has run in a family for thirty years, something that has never existed in any form. These are the most interesting to make and the least predictable to quote, because the design work is the project rather than a stage of it.

The process changes accordingly. There is more back and forth before anything is sculpted, usually sketches or rough forms first, and the point of that is to converge on something specific before it becomes expensive. The honest warning is about expectation rather than feasibility: an idea held in someone's head for years has been refined by imagination in ways a physical object cannot always match. Naming that early makes the result better, not worse.

How we handle it

  1. 01Look at the idea properly and tell you honestly if it will cast.
  2. 02Suggest adjustments that keep the intent and make it possible.
  3. 03Sculpt and show you before committing to metal.
  4. 04Cast, hand-finish, verify and retire the design.

Send us the idea even if you think it is unreasonable. The conversation costs nothing and we would rather talk through something odd than have you assume it is impossible. Some of the best pieces we have made started that way.

Said plainly

Where we stop

We do not make functional objects, moving parts or anything intended for use rather than display. These are decorative collectibles, not tools, and they are not designed or sold as children's products.

FAQ

Common questions

Will you tell me if my idea is bad?
We will tell you honestly if it will not cast well, and suggest how to adjust it.
Is there a size limit?
Practical limits at both ends. Send the idea and we will talk about scale.
Can it have moving parts?
No. That is a different craft and we do not pretend otherwise.
How weird is too weird?
Almost nothing. Castability is the constraint, not subject matter.
