Deciding what to leave out
A building has an enormous amount of detail and including all of it produces something busy and unreadable. The sculpt is largely a series of decisions about what to omit — which is a creative question, and one worth making with you rather than for you.
What we need
- Photographs from several angles, including any distinctive detail.
- Whether you want the setting — trees, wall, drive — or just the building.
- The elevation that matters most to you, which we sculpt hardest.
- Any detail with meaning: a window, a door, a sign.
- Scale, which for buildings drives the level of detail more than usual.
Architecture at a scale that has to give something up
A building reduced to a piece that sits on a desk cannot keep everything, and pretending otherwise produces a muddle. Every window mullion, roof tile and railing cannot survive the reduction, so the work is deciding what carries the identity of the place — a roofline, a tower, a particular arch, a proportion — and letting the rest simplify around it.
That editing is the whole commission and it is worth being involved in. People who commission a building usually have a specific relationship to it: a family home, a first office, a church, a place that no longer exists. What they recognize is often not the elevation an architect would choose. Tell us which part matters and the piece will be built around that rather than around a faithful but generic reduction.

Buildings are among the most rewarding pieces we make, because the emotional weight is usually in a small detail — the front door, a particular window, the sign over a shop. Tell us which one it is and we will make sure it survives the simplification.

- Yes, and it is one of the more common commissions. Photographs from several angles are enough.
- What if the building is gone?
- Old photographs work. Send everything you have, including poor ones.
- Can you include the garden?
- Some setting usually helps it read. Full landscaping tends to make it busy.
- How big?
- Bigger than you think for a detailed building. We will show you what survives at each scale.
