A Hand, at the Size It Actually Was

Almost always for a new baby, and sometimes for a memorial. Either way the appeal is exactness — this is the hand at the size it actually was, in a metal that does not change.

Send a reference, a rough idea, or a photograph. We will tell you honestly whether it will cast well.

The impression is the whole thing

Everything depends on the quality of the impression, and impressions of very small children are difficult because children do not hold still. A poor impression cannot be rescued in the sculpt, and casting from it produces something soft and disappointing.

How it works

  • An impression kit posted to you, with instructions written by someone who has done it.
  • Two attempts included, because the first often does not work.
  • Best done when a baby is asleep, which is the only real trick.
  • We assess the impression before casting and tell you if it needs redoing.
  • The impression is returned or destroyed as you prefer.

The most personal subject, and the most time-sensitive

Hands and small casts occupy a different category to every other commission because they are the one subject taken from life rather than from images. A child's hand, a pair of hands together, a print — these are records of a specific person at a specific moment, and the moment does not wait. Parents of small children are the most common clients here and they are usually working against a stage that is already ending.

That timing is the honest advice worth giving. Where a cast can be taken, take it sooner than feels necessary — a cast keeps indefinitely and can be worked from whenever you are ready, but it cannot be taken retrospectively. Working from photographs alone is possible for hands and it is genuinely harder, because hands are the part of the body people recognize most precisely and photograph least well.

How we handle it

  1. 01Send the kit with clear instructions and a spare.
  2. 02Assess what comes back honestly before proceeding.
  3. 03Cast in .999 fine silver and hand-finish.
  4. 04X-ray verify and issue the certificate.
  5. 05Retire the mould.

Do it while they are asleep. It is the single piece of advice that determines whether this works, and every parent who has tried it awake already knows why.

Said plainly

Where we stop

If the impression is not good enough we will tell you and send another kit rather than cast something soft. There is no point producing a keepsake that does not look like the hand.

FAQ

Common questions

How do you take the impression?
A kit we post to you, with a spare. It is straightforward and best done while the baby sleeps.
What if it goes wrong?
Two attempts are included, and we will send more rather than cast a poor impression.
Can you do an adult hand?
Yes, and it is much easier because adults hold still.
Is it solid silver?
Yes, .999 fine, weighed and X-ray verified like everything else we make.
