The photograph decides everything
We are sculpting from your pictures. A single front-on phone snap in bad light does not contain enough information about the shape of a head, the set of the ears or how an animal actually stood. The commission is only as good as what we can see, and that is the honest constraint.
What makes a good reference set
- Five or more photographs from different angles, including both sides.
- Natural daylight rather than flash, which flattens everything.
- At least one standing, full body, at the animal's eye level.
- Close-ups of the face and any marking that matters to you.
- A video if you have one — movement tells us more than stills do.
Why pets are the commission that has to be exactly right
Pet commissions carry a weight that most other subjects do not, because a large share of them are memorial pieces and the animal is not available to photograph again. There is no second chance to gather references and no possibility of the client shrugging off an inaccuracy. Everyone involved knows that from the first message.
What owners actually recognize is rarely a measurement. It is a stance, a tilt of the head, the particular way an animal sat. That is why we ask for casual photographs rather than good ones, and for several rather than one, and why the sculpt approval stage matters more here than for any other subject. If the photographs that exist are limited, we will say what that means for the result before you commit rather than afterwards.

Long thin legs and fine tails are the practical limit. A whippet in mid-stride is a lovely idea and a fragile object, so we usually adjust the pose slightly to keep it robust. We will show you that change before we cast it, not after.

If your photographs are genuinely not enough, we will say so rather than guess and send you something that is almost your dog. For a memorial, almost is worse than nothing.

- How many photos do you need?
- Five or more from different angles, in daylight. A video is better than any of them.
- Can you work from one photo?
- Sometimes, and the result depends entirely on that photo. We will tell you honestly before you commit.
- My pet has died and I only have a few pictures.
- Send what you have. We will look at them properly and tell you the truth about what is possible.
- Can you match the markings?
- Silver does not carry color, so markings become texture and relief rather than color. We will show you how it reads before casting.
