Scale fights detail
A car has a great deal of fine detail — grilles, badges, mirrors, spokes — and silver has physical limits at small scale. Below a certain size, wheel spokes and wing mirrors stop being castable and start being suggestions. Getting the scale right at the start is what determines whether the piece reads as convincing.
What we work from
- Photographs from every angle, including the interior if it matters.
- The specific year and trim, since bodywork changes between them.
- Any modification that makes it yours rather than a stock example.
- Plate number if you want it, which we can carry at larger scales.
- Your view on scale, because it determines what detail survives.
Hard edges, hard subject
Vehicles are among the least forgiving subjects in sculpture because the eye knows them so well. A proportion that is fractionally wrong on an animal reads as character; the same error on a recognizable car reads immediately as incorrect. Straight lines, symmetry and consistent curvature leave nowhere to hide.
The specific difficulties are scale-related. Fine elements — mirrors, aerials, badges, grille detail, wire wheels — become fragile or unresolvable as the piece gets smaller, so scale is a design decision rather than a preference. We would rather discuss simplifying a detail than cast something that snaps in the post. Reference photographs matter here too, particularly of the specific variant: enthusiasts notice the year, the trim and the wheels immediately.

Bigger solves nearly every problem here. Wing mirrors, spokes and badges all become possible at larger scale, and the piece gets heavier and more expensive as a direct result. That trade is the main decision on a vehicle commission and it is worth making deliberately.

- How big does it need to be?
- Bigger than most people first suggest. Fine detail like spokes and mirrors needs scale to survive.
- Can you include the badges?
- Manufacturer marks are their trademarks. We will talk through what is appropriate.
- Motorcycles and boats?
- Yes. Bikes are harder because almost everything on them is thin.
